Our papale niu (Coconut hats) are made on the island of O'ahu, Hawai'i. It is made 99% out of Hawaii coconut leaf and 1% is tape to hold the leaf together in the beginning process of weaving. Coconut hats were made to create shade for fisherman for long days out at sea, or for the farmers, and today they are used for those things in addition to wall art, fashion, and any outdoor activities. In Hawai'i, the coconut trees are considered "the tree of life" because they never stop producing! With the many different uses of the coconut tree, coconut hats are just one of many.
Our coconut hats are water resistant, but should not be fully submerged. Although our coconut hats are strong and durable, they should be handled with care. If done so, your papale niu (coconut hat) should last forever!
Due to the nature of the materials, each hat will be slightly different. As the hats age, they will change from a deep green color to a light tan color.
